My opinion
Then suddenly the tune went false, The dancers wearied of the waltz, The shadows ceased to wheel and whirl. And down the long and silent street The dawn with silver-sandalled feet, Crept like a frightened girl. The life and works of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) have a perennial fascination for the theatre going and reading public, and it is surprising that no separate edition of the poetry has been published for decades. Malcolm Hicks provides a generous and timely selection, introduction and notes. Here is the brilliant twenty-six-year-old's only collection of poems, which displays his sensuousness and technical precocity, with deft echoes of earlier masters. The young Wilde explores styles and forms to counteract what seemed to him the exhaustion of the poetic language current at the time. The substantial works of his later maturity-including 'The Harlot's House', The Sphinx and the legendary Ballad of Reading Gao-are also included.

"And all the woe that moved him so
As he gave that bitter cry
And the wild regrets and bloody sweats
None knew so well as I
For he who lives more lives than one
More deaths than one must die."

-The Ballad of Reading Gaol

This small book is a collection of the poems composed by the play write Oscar Wilde. it is a selection of some of his popular poems but does not include the total of his works.
This is just what my soul needed, soul food ! What a great writter. While I disagree on author's views on life, I still appreciate his way of expression.Wilde was the best. I love his wit. He was so funny and smart. This is an anthology one can pick up and return to as often as one likes and always be inspired. This is where I saw a bit of Oscar's work and life. I am now enjoying for the first time, his poetry. I am very pleased.Actually two poems in this book ("The Ballads of Reading Goal" and "The Flower of Love") made me give it 4stars.

And all men kill the thing they love
By all let it be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look.
Some with a flattering word.
The coward does it with a kiss.
The brave man with a sword!
--from "The Ballad of Reading Gaol"

About the Author
Known for his barbed wit, Oscar Wilde was one of the most successful late-Victorian playwrights and a great celebrity. The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray are among his best known works. He is perhaps most famous for his trial, in which he eloquently defended homosexual love and was sentenced to two years of hard labor.Although best known for his sparkling and witty plays, Oscar Wilde also distinguished himself as a prolific poet. From "Ravenna," a prize-winning poem he wrote in college, to "The Ballad of Reading Gaol," penned during his time in prison for homosexual acts, Wilde created a fascinating body of verse. More than 35 of his works appear in this excellent collection, and they reveal the scope and brilliance of his writing. Many were inspired by his time in Italy, including "Sonnet: On hearing the Dies Irae sung in the Sistine Chapel." Other brief pieces, called Impressions, capture the feeling of a moment: "Le Jardin" evokes a garden as winter descends. Still more honor his fellow poets, including "On the Sale of Keats' Love Letters." An enlightening anthology that Wilde lovers will treasure.
