Read full description of the books The Treason of Mary Louvestre:When I began reading the epic Civil War era novel, The Treason of Mary Louvestre, I was unprepared for the distinctive adventure I was embarking on. The main character is based on the real life spy, Mary Touvestre, a black seamstress who resided in Norfolk, Virginia. Fictitious characters were added to the story; yet their lives accurately portrayed people that could have lived in Norfolk. Unlike the classic image of slavery, Norfolk, Virginia had a class of slaves and freedmen who were educated, supported, and acquired trades. They received freedoms and privileges most slaves would never experience. Dr. My Haley explores the lives of several of these tradespeople in her book. Yet she doesn’t idealize the life of relative privilege experienced by tradespeople in Norfolk.
As the stories unfold, the realities of the ills of the era are poignantly portrayed, forcing Mary and others to step perilously out of their lives of comfort. Seamstress Mary is compelled to perform an act of treason against the Confederate states. She plots to steal blueprints of the ironclad ship, the CSS Virginia. One cannot help but become drawn into Mary’s perilous journey in the dead of winter on foot from Norfolk to Washington D.C. I have visited many Civil War sites including the historic site of the ironclad Monitor and appreciate Dr. Haley’s attention to accurate detail. The book is intricately woven with many historically accurate references, testament to the author’s ten years of research. My knowledge of the culture in Norfolk, Virginia during the Civil War period, was expanded through the entertaining yet realistic characterizations. The Treason of Mary Louvestre is unquestionably a fascinating and engagingly atypical work of historical fiction.
I encourage you not only to read The Treason of Mary Louvestre but to find an opportunity to hear the author speak. This past summer, I had the great privilege of hearing the amazing story weaver, author Dr. My Haley speak at the 9th Triennial Gathering of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America http://www.welcatg.org/ . My only disappointment was that her book signing was too short for the great demand and the copies of books available were sold out long before I could purchase one. Although my book is not signed, I am thankful that I could easily purchase this jewel of a book online.
Read information about the authorFor My Haley, first came Roots, and now The Treason of Mary Louvestre.
The Treason of Mary Louvestre is an historical novel inspired by the little-known but true story of a black woman spy during the Civil War, whose courageous actions led to a northern victory in the important naval battle at Hampton Roads, VA in 1862. This story of Civil War bravery is a tale about one woman’s great courage and represents the finest of the American daring-do; outstanding is the example of an ordinary person doing extraordinary things.
Among the unique qualities of this story is the setting in which Mary Louvestre lived and worked. Her life was largely among the rich and influential of the time. She started out as a seamstress and developed her fashions to become a sought-after designer who freed women from their tight corsets and bindings. Just when she thought she was about to achieve her dream, the forces of the Civil War caused elements to shift and her life to take a different turn.
My Lewis Haley spent her early childhood in South Charleston, West Virginia before her parents moved the family to Columbus, Ohio.
While working on her doctorate in Communications and African American Studies at The Ohio State University, My was inspired by a speech delivered on campus by author Alex Haley. After achieving her goal of earning a PhD, she set out on her next goal: to work with the renowned author.
Impressed by My’s talent and drive, Alex Haley gave her a major assignment—to assist him in writing the remaining two-thirds of a book that was long overdue to his publisher. Within a matter of 18 months together they completed the work and that book, Roots: The Saga of An American Family, which catapulted Alex Haley to international fame. My and Alex married in 1977, and over the years collaborated on many projects, including the miniseries “Roots: The Next Generation.” After Alex’s death, My Haley immersed herself in writing pieces based upon her growing up with her grandmother, other novels, and many screenplays for feature film and TV.
My lives and works in Las Vegas, Nevada with her partner where she enjoys her other many interests – organic foods, cooking from farm to table, reading, and lots of exercise. She is also writing the sequel to the The Treason of Mary Louvestre in which Mary returns to the South to do more espionage and demonstrates her natural abilities in spycraft during the War. My also has what she calls “a slew” of additional book and film projects she is preparing to launch in the near future.
