Read full description of the books On the Theory and Therapy of Mental Disorders: An Introduction to Logotherapy and Existential Analysis:

The book begins and ends with strange passages. The lengthy preface sounds very much like a long thread of miracle cure stories. I thought I was reading a theological rather than a psychological book in the beginning.
And then a sudden shift on page 42, where the proper book begins. In difficult, not only psychological but also medical terminology, a theory of neurosis (and psychosis) is presented which is precise, logical, clear (if you spend the effort to step into this terminological cosmos) and likely. Only one problem stayed with me for the whole book: What exactly does "sense" or "meaning of life" mean? This is a core notion of Frankl's entire theory and the foundation of what he calls logotherapy. I find "sense of life" not clearly enough defined to make it useful as a goal of psychotherapy. While Frank gives a lot of clear definitions, the core of his theory lies in a fuzzy area. I think there is a link missing between the pathological and pathogenesis of neurosis and the miracle cures Frankl presents as being based on treating the mind, which is the seat of sense and meaning.
The conclusion then suddenly celebrates Sigmund Freud and his achievements - while throughout the whole book Frankl very much opposed classical psychoanalysis. A rather strange book... but the theoretical parts are really worth to be considered.

Viktor Emil Frankl M.D., Ph.D., was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist as well as a Holocaust survivor. Frankl was the founder of logotherapy, which is a form of Existential Analysis, the "Third Viennese School" of psychotherapy.

His book Man's Search for Meaning (first published under a different title in 1959: From Death-Camp to Existentialism. Originally published in 1946 as Ein Psycholog erlebt das Konzentrationslager) chronicles his experiences as a concentration camp inmate and describes his psychotherapeutic method of finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most sordid ones, and thus a reason to continue living. He was one of the key figures in existential therapy.
